From Press Release

The Israel Lacrosse Association is proud to announce the inaugural Israel Lacrosse Invitational Tournament which will be held from August 14-18, 2013, at the Oldfields School near Baltimore, Maryland. The tournament, which is open to Jewish American high school students (including graduating Seniors), will feature 10 teams of athletes who will represent their state in a competitive four-day tournament.

“We’re very excited to help link high school lacrosse players with their Jewish identity and the State of Israel,” said Israel men’s national team head coach Bill Beroza. “The tournament is a great opportunity for us to utilize lacrosse as a platform to connect young Jewish athletes with Israel, in a competitive setting. Through their shared passion for the sport of lacrosse, these teams will be directly contributing to the development of the sport at the grassroots level in the Middle East.”

Teams from 10 states have confirmed participation: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Each team will participate in an equipment drive for a partner Israeli city, with second-hand gear being collected for distribution to Israeli youth in those cities.

Team California, which will be playing for Tel Aviv, will be coached by Israel assistant coach Pete Ginnegar. Ginnegar recently finished his 9th season as head coach at Claremont College. Over his 30-year career, Ginnegar previously coached at D1 programs such as Cornell, Gannon, Mercyhurst and Ohio State, as well as stints with Babson, Lake Forest, Mary Washington, Mount Union and Springfield College. His lifetime coaching record is 251-157. Israel midfielder Seth Mahler, a graduate of Whittier College, will serve as Ginnegar’s assistant coach. The team will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.

Team Colorado, which will be playing for Karmiel, will be coached by Israel assistant coach Jon Barocas. Barocas, who recently served as the Director of College Scouting for the Denver Outlaws, is a member of the Colorado Lacrosse Hall of Fame in recognition of his legendary leadership as head coach at East Manual/Denver East High School. Former Johns Hopkins midfielder Zach Tedeschi will serve as Barocas’ assistant coach. The team will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.

Team Connecticut, which will be playing for Modi’in, will be coached by Matt Glaser. Glaser currently serves as President and Head Coach of the CT Lynx Elite Lacrosse Program. Tryouts for the team will take place in mid-June, (time and location TBD).

Team Florida, which will be playing for Netanya, will be coached by Neil McAdorey, who serves as a coach for Team 22 as well as at the St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton. Team New Jersey, which will be playing for Eilat, will be coached by Israel assistant coach and Kean University Head Coach Shelley Sheiner. The team will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.

Staff Report

Twenty-eight of the top boys’ lacrosse club programs in the nation will be sending their top teams to compete July 5-7 in the inaugural National Invitational Best of the Best Club Team Showcase at Mitchell Fields near Hofstra University.

The event (www.natinvitebob.com) will feature four equal brackets for each of the Classes of 2014, 2015 and 2016. Winners of each bracket will compete in a playoff to decide age group champions.

“The club programs have grown in size and numbers throughout the country and this showcase was designed solely for the top teams in each club to compete head-to-head from traditional hotbeds of lacrosse as well as other fast growing regions in the sport,” said event founder Marty Sands. “It is going to be very, very competitive at every grade level. There will be no easy games.

“I think that college coaches realize that many players can appear strong against average competition. However, when great players are pitted against other great players and great teams are pitted against other great teams, college coaches can really get their work done.”

Sands expects approximately 50-to-75 college coaches to attend.

“College coaches today have a lot of choices,” he said. “We believe by assembling the best club teams to play against each other, we’ll allow the college coaches to observe just how good a player is against really great competition in every single game.”

The teams attending include:

CT Chargers (CT) LI Express (LI, NY) Dukes (PA) Resolute (OH) LI Outlaws (LI, NY) Building Blocks (NJ) LI Sting (LI, NY) Twist (PA) 3D Lacrosse (New England) No Excuse (TN) IronHorse (TX) Crush Nation (Atl & Buff) Leading Edge Lacrosse (NJ) Baltimore Crabs (MD) LI Jesters (LI, NY) Team Turnpike (NJ) New Jersey Riot (NJ) Team NC (NC) Thunder Lacrosse Club (GA) Team Minnesota (MN) Long Island Jesters (NY) Trilogy Lacrosse (NJ) MadLax (VA) Be the Best (NY) SweetLax (Upstate NY)) Westchester Predators (NY) True Player Lacrosse (NY) Team Long Island (NY)

“Clearly from the list you can see that we have a very good portion of the top club teams sending their A teams,” Sands said. “While there are other tournaments that weekend, we are hopeful that college coaches see the value of the showcase we have created.”

“Lacrosse is a very competitive sport and many of the best club teams in the country really want to test just how good they really are,” he added. “I am hopeful this showcase allows them to do that.”

Separately, Sands also is running two individual showcase events that were immediate successes in the recruiting scene in 2012.

The National Invitational 175 will be held July 29-31 2013 at RPI, which has recently built a state-of-the-art facility. This invite-only showcase held at Union College last summer drew over 50 coaches.

Last November Sands launched the National Invitational 175 Fall Select Showcase. That event drew 70 coaches.

“We are really working on improving upon the success,” Sands said.

This year’s National Invitational 175 Fall Select Showcase will be held on November 26. The application process will be opened on July 1. The National Invitational 175 Summer showcase has a large wait list, but players can apply at the site (http://www.natinvite175.com/) for future consideration.

Brine official sees much growth in the Brine NLC as national event

BOYDS, Md. – In six years, the Brine National Lacrosse Classic has evolved into a major national event for boys’ and girls’ lacrosse players at both the high school and middle school levels.

Long Island’s Casey Cummo (10) and Chelsea Sorahan (15) defend New Jersey’s Taylor Patrizi in the girls’ high school championship game at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic.

This year’s event, held July 1-3 at the Maryland Soccerplex, drew an estimated 3,700 fans and over 100 college coaches. In total, 1,300 athletes, 96 coaches and 56 regional teams – including 20 high school boys’ and 12 high school girls’ squads – from all areas of the nation and Canada participated in the event.

The New Jersey North boys and Long Island girls won the high school championship. Grant Wasch, Brine’s Retail and Event Marketing Manager, said the event fulfills many more goals than just producing national championships.

“The event is well-organized and well-run and it’s unique in that kids from around the country can play together with others in their state and region and form relationships that they can take to college,” he said.

This year the Brine NLC expanded to include “Pride” All-Star Games for boys in Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New England and Ohio. These events allowed more players to be seen by college coaches and provided another chance for coaches to evaluate players to compete in the Brine NLC.

“We want to continue to support the expansion of lacrosse using the Pride Games,” said Wasch. “As the Pride Games grow, more recruiters will focus on them.

“For the first year, they went absolutely awesome. In Florida, we partnered the Pride Games with a large youth tournament, so there was a ton on of interest and energy. They (the youth players) stayed to watch and it was a great experience.

“It’s important to bring all this together so kids can see showcase games in the different regions. That way if they can’t come to the Classic, they can experience lacrosse at that high level.”

Another unique aspect of the Brine NLC is the Middle School Academy. The All Star Lacrosse Academy is geared to better prepare players for high school lacrosse. A daily curriculum offered by NCAA lacrosse coaches provides players with one-on-one fundamental position technique training, and collegiate level coaching during competitive games.

“The Academy not only has top players, but top coaches,” said Wasch. “This allows younger kids to grow and learn the sport. They can make a difference for younger kids, helping them them grow as players in many ways.”

Boys’ Academy Director Ron Caputo, assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach at Duke University and 2013 NCAA Division One Men’s Lacrosse Champion believes that “the game of lacrosse is overplayed and under taught. The Brine National All Star Lacrosse Academy provides players with fundamental elements needed to enhance their skills and awareness. From what I saw from the players at this year’s Academy, it’s safe to say that the game of lacrosse is in a good spot.”

NCAA lacrosse coaches from top colleges and university programs coached the Academy players during the event. Coaches came from Duke, Virginia, Yale, Penn, Maryland, Towson, Villanova, UMBC, Georgetown, High Point, Hofstra, Air Force, Bellarmine, USC, Colorado, Monmouth and the University of Florida.

“I think the kids are really skilled,” added Academy coach A.J. Brazile (Hofstra University Offensive Coordinator), who guided the Pennsylvania boys’ team. “They were really energetic and they wanted to learn. For me, coaching here at this age was a breath of fresh air. I liked getting back to the little guys.”

Wasch praised the leadership of Brine NLC Director Joel Franklin and said the event brings in all aspect of teaching and leadership.

Seminars presented by Dr. Greg Dale, Director of Sports Psychology at Duke University offer parents and players valuable insight to the importance of mental preparation for personal, academic and athletic achievement.

Where is the event headed? Wasch said there are plans to further expand next year through the Pride Games and the addition of more regoinal teams. He said the event has endless potential.

“I see it continuing to grow in popularity,” he said. “I think it will become a major recruiting event, It will take some time as different regions continue to grow and the Pride Games progress, but Brine is committed to it.”

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. – Brendan Donnelly (Comsewogue) scored two goals as Team Long Island defeated Sweetlax (NY), 6-3, today to win the 2014 Division championship at the inaugural NXT Philly Summer Invitational at United Sports.

Meanwhile, in the 2015 final, the host team, NXT 2015 defeated Laker Future (N.J.), 6-4.

Team Long Island won the NXT Philly Summer Invitational 2014 championship

In the 2016 championship at nearby Downingtown High School. Laxachusetts claimed a 7-3 win over the New Hampshire Tomahawks Also, Team 91 (NY) won the 2017 crown with a 7-5 win over CT Chargers.

Team Long Island struggled last week at the National Invitational Best of the Best Team Showcase in Uniondale, N.Y. But this weekend the team made a “pact” according to co-coach Mike Gongas.

“We didn’t play as a team last weekend we made a pact we were going to work hard this week to play as a team,” he said. “So we put it together and for stronger and better and did the right things to win the tournament.”

Sweetlax scored first, but Team Long Island tallied the next five goals. Liam Walsh (Miller Place), Tyler O’Brien (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), Jake Buonaiuto (Miller Place) and Nick Annitto (St. John the Baptist) each scored once.

Still, it was the Team Long Island defense and goaltending, along with standout face-off work by rising sophomore Gerard Arceri (Smithtown East), that did not go unnoticed.

Troy Reh

“It was a team effort,” said defenseman and Albany commit Troy Reh (Rocky Point). “We were sliding and we all had each other’s back.

“We wanted to win the whole thing and we played as well as we can play. Last week we had a hiccup and didn’t do so well. Today everything was clicking.”

The Team Long Island goaltenders included Patrick Dallon (Rocky Point, St. Joseph’s University commit) and freshman Jake McGregor (Comsewogue). The defense featured Reh, Ryan Baker, Anthony Cesario, Andrew Seheres and defensive middies Brendan McGovern and Thomas Liantonio.

Gangas also praised the work of Arceri.

“We pride ourselves on our defense to win games and the other part was our face-off kid,” he said. “He just turned 15 and he’s a 2016 kid playing in a 2014 division. When you have someone like that getting possession after possession it’s lights out.”

Staff Report

Matt Heim (Central Bucks East, 2014) scored early in overtime on a man up laser to lift the Duke’s Lacrosse Club 1 (PA) to a 5-4 victory over Tri-State Black (N.J.) in the Tri-State National Summer Lacrosse Festival Senior AA championship at Mercer County Park (N.J.).

Heim took a feed from Hunter Jones (Abington, 2015) for the game-winner. Dukes LC had gained the man-up edge late in regulation.

“Once it got to overtime and we had the man up situation everyone was confident at that point,” said Heim, a Loyola commit who had two goals. “We felt the game was ours and we wanted to end it right there.”

Heim had given his team a 4-3 edge with about seven minutes to play, but Tri-State Black tied it with several minutes left. Also scoring for the Dukes were Andrew Pettit (Tower Hill, 2015), Matt Schleicher (Conestoga, 2015) and Mikey Zadroga (Upper Merion, 2014).

“It was a real tight game,” said Heim. “This has always been a big one for Dukes.”

Heim noted that the Dukes had not had a lopt of time together and can use this title as a springboard for next week’s much-anticipated Champ Camp at Johns Hopkins where the Dukes have been dominant by winning six of the past seven titles.

“There are always teams gunning for us,” Heim said. “We’ll see Got Skillz, Sweetlax and Tri-State (which won the title in 2011 over Dukes) and some other great teams.

“This weekend we were down five or six guys that couldn’t play but I think this is a big win. We had good chemistry and we’re only going to get better at Champ Camp.”

In the semis, Duke’s 1 defeated its brother team, Duke’s 2 as Schleicher had two goals and an assist.
